Acting now on standards will enable public sector to reap the benefits of AI

Local authorities using AI will need to establish suitable governance mechanisms, and to be able to publicly demonstrate that the benefits outweigh the risks, says Jonathan Evans.

Artificial intelligence – and in particular machine learning – will transform the way national and local government make decisions and deliver public services. Correctly implemented, this technology is a real opportunity to make public services more efficient, transparent and objective.

Front line services, many of which are delivered by local government, will be transformed – to the benefit of the public and the taxpayer – by dynamic, automated systems that will improve services and increase efficiency. We know that local government is keen to realise these benefits; but it's early days.
