Adapt to survive

Local government chief executives need particular attitudes and approaches if councils are to meet the commercial demands of the future, explains Malcolm Morley

There is an increasing interest in commercialisation within local government. But if commercialisation is going to make a significant contribution to the revenue flows of councils, it has to mean much more than getting third parties to pay for services within their areas.

It has to involve creating a profitable trading activity with reach beyond the council's boundaries.
