Making use of redundant local assets could be part of the solution to squaring the circle in local government finances, says Tim Byles.

Marking the start of its annual conference in Birmingham, the Local Government Association (LGA) issued a stark warning that by 2020 the social care bill will soak up almost all of council spending, with funding for libraries and leisure centres being squeezed by up to 90% as a result.
