Audit and governance is the conscience of the council

The remit of the audit and governance committee is much more than the debits and credits of the statement of accounts - which is actually only one part of their work, says Adele Taylor.

As a new municipal year starts and for many of us having had local elections, it means brand new councillors and committee members to brief, train and develop to ensure they can perform their roles to their best.

Planning training for our audit and governance committees can be tricky, especially when you have a number of new councillors to local government. It can feel like there is a lot of technical information they are going to need to consider and, if you aren't careful, it can make people feel it could be one of the most ‘dry' committees compared to some of the others.
