An austere future for local government

Simon Parker says local government is probably not going to stop the cuts juggernaut in 2013.

Local government press officers don't seem to have had much of a Christmas break. While the rest of the country sank into a sprout-induced stupor, the leaders of northern cities and rural shires took to the front pages and attacked the Government for starving their areas of funding.

These groups have a point. Councils have taken a disproportionate share of the cuts, and there is compelling evidence that poorest areas have been hardest hit.
