Autumn Statement: The coming years will be extraordinarily difficult

The chancellor hopes for growth by balancing tax rises and spending restraint, but the statement does little to address the serious underlying economic issues, says Rob Whiteman.

Most of the announcements in the Autumn Statement had found their way into the press beforehand and it was reassuring to listen to a fiscal statement free of shocks and surprises.

The chancellor's statement was very much about restoring credibility and stability after the disastrous mini-budget two months ago. His three stated priorities of stability, growth and public services are right and sensible.
