Autumn Statement: Jam today, gruel tomorrow

In last week’s Autumn Statement chancellor Jeremy Hunt has pushed public spending cuts beyond the next general election in the hope a stronger economy will make them unnecessary, reports Michael Burton.

There was bad news and marginally less bad news in last week's Autumn Statement  – so let's start with the latter.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) summed up the announcements as ‘Lord, make me squeeze public service budgets! But just not yet.'
