Could the beating stick be used to point out councils' efficiencies?

While local government focuses on the stick used to beat it, where is the carrot?, asks Heather Jameson. 'What if councils embraced a little transparency and used this new data to create their own stories?'

The row over Oflog league tables refuses to die down – and you only need a quick glance at The MJ to see why. We seem to have reignited past rows over standards and inspections, a decade and a half after local government thought it had seen the last of the Audit Commission.

Let's start with Liverpool et al. Congratulations to the council, which announced last week that commissioners would leave Merseyside. Several years after intervention, it seems there has been a turnaround – of sorts.
