Time to make big decisions on care

The future options for funding adult social care are going to leave central government with some stark choices, the latest report from the IFS has claimed. Heather Jameson reports.

The latest figures from the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) have highlighted what local government has known for a long time – the trajectory of rising social care costs and falling local government income means the future funding of the sector is unsustainable.

Without a fundamental rethink of plans for local government funding, social care will swallow up more and more of councils' cash – swamping the other services and draining resources, leading to further financial instability across local government.
