Birmingham's dash to digital

Dr Peter Bishop explains how taking direct control enabled Birmingham to transform its ICT operation into a modern digital service. The ambition is for a world-class digital city that fosters inclusive growth and levelling up.

It was during the pandemic that ‘taking back control' of our information and communication technologies (ICT) services from Capita really came to life.

In those frightening few days, we moved more than 6,000 employees to work from home to stay safe, while continuing to deliver much-needed public services. We accomplished this at a pace never heard of in Birmingham, where technology-enabled change had previously taken place slowly, as the grinding wheels of our outsourcing contract slowly turned.
