Among the many arguments for breaking up the big banks – separating the high street, commercial side from the investment 'casino' – is the sense that they require different skills and cultures to function well.

On the high street is the need for caution, steadiness and order, while, in the casino, a capacity to take greater risks and tolerate higher levels of uncertainty.
