Housing secretary James Brokenshire lifted the cap on the cold weather fund on the same day it was revealed homeless deaths soared by a quarter.

Several local authorities had expressed an interest in bidding for funding beyond the caps in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's original offer.
