The Budget gave with one hand and took away with another

The additional £1.3bn will not go very far once the cost of the new rates of National Living Wage and National Insurance are factored in, most notably in social care, says Nicole Wood.

Against expectations, the chancellor's autumn Budget included several new measures impacting local government finance.

Announcements included an additional £1.3bn grant funding for 2025-26, £1bn for special educational needs and disabilities, £500m for pothole repairs and £1bn for the Household Support Fund. These were hard fought for and must not be sniffed at.
