Build back beautiful

A new report puts forward a hyper-local approach to overcoming the housing crisis, with councils the recipients of the tax levied on the uplift of developments. The proposals should be taken seriously, says Sir Bob Neill.

The results are in, the people have spoken: Bristol City Hall is the UK's most attractive municipal building, followed closely by the town halls of Paisley and Nuneaton.

Languishing near the bottom of the same survey, conducted by Policy Exchange and Deltapoll in an attempt to measure the attractiveness of civic buildings, are the recently constructed Brent Civic Centre and Shrewsbury's Shirehall, an example of post-war modernism.
