Building a new housing approach

A new document explores why we are seeing the rise of local authority-led housing delivery, and the role planners can play in this. Laura Sharman explains.

In recent years, councils have done a 180 turn on their approach to housebuilding. The rapid rise of council-led housing companies, combined with the lifting of the Housing Revenue Account borrowing cap in 2018, have heralded a new era in building for local authorities.

However, councils are not just becoming housebuilders again to meet Government targets but also to stimulate local economies and meet their social goals.
