'Cakeism' still seems the solution de jour

Strategic hard choices are ones that most Conservatives – but also many voters at large – are happy to try and ignore, says Ben Page.

I hope you are about to go somewhere splendid for a break (assuming you get there) – or have already been. Meanwhile, we await our new Prime Minister.

The voters at large – whether red or blue – want them to focus heavily on the cost of living crisis, the economy, and public services. Taxation and the EU relations, despite queues at Dover, clock in at number seven and number nine among voters as a whole. Making the Rwanda policy on immigration work is good soundbite territory – and sounds tough to Conservative voters. Some 56% of them say immigration is the key issue, despite overall concern about it having collapsed since 2015 among the public at large.
