Are we up to the challenge?

Councils are delivering on children and young people’s services, but an increased emphasis on local solutions will be key to keeping up with demands, writes David Sparks

Councils work hard to ensure children, older and disabled people, those in care and many other groups have access to the services they rely on. This year's National Children and Adult Services Conference is the perfect opportunity to debate the issues with experts working with senior politicians from across the health and social care sector.

Funding cuts have hit councils hard. By the end of this Parliament, funding to local government will have been cut by more than 40%. By delivering differently, councils have saved over £3.5bn from adult social care budgets whilst continuing to provide day-to-day services. This is a feat in itself –something we don't say often enough.
