For the past couple of years we have been served up a depressing daily commentary reminding us about the dire state of the economy and how this will stretch into the foreseeable future.

In more prosperous times, the economy largely takes care of itself but in austerity councils must explore new ways of building their local areas to help mitigate against the impact the downturn is having on communities and residents.
