Making the move into commercialism

As the new year dawns and council budgets continue to shrink, Malcolm Morley explains why it is vital for all councils to change the way they think, behave and perform in the context of commercialisation

The question of whether or not to pursue commercialisation will be on many council agendas in 2017. It is important, before decisions are taken to pursue commercialisation, that there is a shared understanding of what it actually means. Only then can councils identify what is required to pursue it.

Commercialisation is the way of thinking, behaving and performing that enables an organisation to identify and exploit market opportunities to generate profitable revenue streams and capital receipts.
