The difficulties of running well-run elections are increasing, the Electoral Commission has warned as legislation to trigger a pre-Christmas General Election cleared the House of Lords.

In written evidence published by the Electoral Registration Act 2013 Committee yesterday, the commission wrote: ‘The difficulties of delivering well-run elections are increasing, especially when polls are unplanned, and as local authorities are faced with reduced resources and a growing number of skilled professionals leaving electoral work.'
