Competition drives up services

Sir Stephen Bubb on competition and the reformed health Bill.

Recently I presented the final recommendations of the NHS Future Forum on choice and competition to the Cabinet. I went on to present the findings to the health select committee.

Competition was undoubtedly the most controversial area of the Forum's work, but nonetheless we managed to reach a clear consensus. The evidence presented to us was overwhelming, competition can and does drive up the quality of services. What's more it drives down costs and even saves lives – as long as patients are in charge .
