Compromise may be required on fair funding

For the fair funding review to be successful compromise may be necessary, says Richard Flinton - and a (largely) united front will give a better shot at securing a system that can stand the test of time.

As county chief executives met for the first time in 2019 earlier this month, it was clear that finance will be top of the local government agenda again this year.

With the fair funding review due to be concluded in the same year as the Spending Review, it has been asserted in some parts that the former is a distraction to the aim of securing more money for local authorities. Media coverage in the past few weeks is perhaps an example of this.
