It has been a long and challenging journey to bring about the biggest shake-up in local government in North Yorkshire for nearly 50 years, and one we have been battling to achieve for almost two decades.

With an announcement from Westminster in July 2021 that a single unitary authority would be established for North Yorkshire, we had already laid the foundations to create a council to cover the largest area in England.
