We continue harnessing new possibilities for local places

London Councils are helping to drive forward the agenda for a smart, 21st century city, says John O'Brien. The role that councils have historically played in the context of place is an enduring one.

I sat in a meeting this morning when we started talking about the digitalisation of services. In the spirit of full disclosure, I confess to feeling a tad of sympathy for the person who said they found all of this quite challenging as they had only recently come to terms with electricity!

The discussion did get me thinking about the role of technology in managing our places going forward, particularly our congested cities. As technology continues to improve and develop at dazzling speed, smart city initiatives have the potential to change the way our places use artificial intelligence and big data and, in particular, to revolutionise our view of transportation.
