Core Cities leaving LGA's orbit?

Judith Barnes asks whether the Core Cities' desire to go it alone marks an economic parting of the ways.

While the eight core cities recognise there are matters that affect a large number of local authorities in a similar way, their press statement says 'there are a range of critical issues which affect large urban areas differently and on which we need to have more focused representation at the national level.

Core Cities' influence has increased because of the priority placed upon economic growth to stimulate the economy.  They account for more than a quarter of the nation's output - a role recognised in the Heseltine Review 'No stone unturned in pursuit of Growth' and now in the Government's response.
