The costs of supporting people fleeing conflict must be recognised

Alison Griffin say that recently the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Home Office have been working with councis to plan for the arrival of British citizens from Lebanon, and 'this approach is welcome'

Over the past five years councils have been at the forefront of supporting people escaping conflict and oppression from Ukraine, Hong Kong, Afghanistan and Sudan. And now, as the situation in Lebanon deteriorates and Government increases the volume of its calls for British citizens to leave immediately, we brace ourselves once more.

While the temporary accommodation crisis in London and across the country means any need for shelter is challenging, we have learned lessons from the Sudan evacuation
