What councils need from the new chancellor

Philip Hammond has plenty to balance at his first Autumn Statement but reform must be made to ease the pressure on local government, says Sean Nolan

As we move through a leadership-focused conference season, all eyes will be on Birmingham next week to see if the new prime minister really has managed to steady the ship.

From our public finance point of view, CIPFA will also be paying particularly close attention to the chancellor, Philip Hammond, as he makes his first big announcement since assuming the role.

It is unlikely that he will spill many of the beans intended for his 23 November Autumn Statement to the House.
