Councils need to think differently when designing cyber defences

Criminal hackers don’t stick to the rules when they are designing attacks and nor should councils when designing their defences, writes Andrew Muter.

Juggling with two electoral overlapping processes brings with it some complexities – not least the potential risks to the integrity of live electoral data ensuring that the right people are able to vote at the right election. Right in the middle of our two elections a different sort of IT risk pushed its way to the top of the news headlines.

The aptly named ‘WannaCry' malware attack which brought parts of the NHS to a grinding halt immediately made me wonder whether we were similarly affected. It's a worry, I suspect, that was shared by many chief executives.
