Councils risk missing out on the transformative potential of AI

Central government must recognise the importance of local government in their plans for AI-assisted public service delivery, argues Leo Hanna.

Earlier this month the Prime Minister launched a 50-point plan to unleash AI across the public and private sectors. More than a third of these points cover how the Government can ‘change lives by embracing AI' in public services across the country; a crucial ambition, which will improve efficiency, quality and user experience.

When it comes to implementing the plan, local services will be critical but despite accounting for almost a fifth of all public spending, nowhere within the Government's plan are councils mentioned. This risks almost a fifth of government services being left behind.
