Councils struggle to balance budgets, watchdog finds

Scottish Accounts Commission says councils may have to reconsider decisions they had ruled out in order to balance their budgets.

Councils may have to consider decisions they had previously ruled out in order to balance their budgets, according to the Scottish Accounts Commission.

In its annual report, the commission said councils are predicting substantial funding gaps over the next three years. Although it states that reserves held by local authorities have increased, more information is needed on why reserves are built up and what the council intends to do with them.
