Prime Minister Boris Johnson's former chief adviser has described government suggestions that care homes were shielded in the pandemic as ‘complete nonsense'.

Health secretary Matt Hancock last year insisted that from the beginning of the pandemic the Government had tried to 'throw a protective ring around our care homes'.
