I don't know who's going to win the county council elections, but I'll make a bet that the loser will be democracy.

Turnouts for local polls have been flatlining in the early 30s for decades, to the extent that we now accept it as normal. Nationally, our political life has degraded into resentful mudslinging. Numerous studies have shown that representative democracy is in terminal decline.
