The need for directly elected mayors

Opinion still seems to be out as to how effective a mayoral system will be says Sir Stephen Bubb.

Ballot boxes will open on the 3 May for some of England's largest cities to decide whether they want directly-elected mayors.

If adopted, the mayors will have a range of devolved powers – although still to be outlined – and will be responsible for driving economic growth and delivering real benefits for their cities and residents.
