Time to ditch the Assembly

After 21 years, Richard Stokoe argues that the London Assembly is failing in its duty to hold the Mayor of London to account. Borough leaders, he claims, would make a better replacement.

At the dawn of the millennium, New Labour devolved powers from Whitehall to regions. Stormont was established post the Good Friday agreement, Holyrood came into being and the Senedd brought new life to Welsh politics.

Alongside these regional assemblies and parliaments came the introduction of directly elected mayors.
