Don't forget the mid-sized cities

Joanna Averley warns that mid-sized cities are in danger of slipping between the gaps in local growth policy.

Over the past 18 months, the coalition Government has transformed the local economic landscape with policies to benefit larger cities or those with strong private sectors but so far seem to have missed the mark for medium-sized cities, which slip between the gaps in policy.

Our research found that places such as Sunderland, Preston, Derby and Blackpool struggle to unlock economic potential because of underlying weaknesses in their economies.
