Simon Parker gives a thematic overview to the New Local Government Network’s annual conference, which earlier this week discussed the future of English governance

Billy Bragg is a wonderful singer, but when it comes to politics I struggle to agree with him. I have always wished the Bard of Barking the very best of luck with his search for a new girlfriend, but I do want to change the world and I am certainly looking for a new England.

The Scottish referendum last year brought home the fact that the UK has been too centralised for too long, resulting in decades of poorly thought-through policy and culminating in the near break-up of the country.
