The amount English councils collected from business rates in 2015/16 increased by 3.7% or £804m on the year before to £22.4bn, according to the latest finance statistics compiled by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Local authorities reported that they granted a total of £3.6bn of relief from business rates in the last financial year – £214m or 6.4% more than in 2014/15.
