The exemption of charitable giving

Sir Stephen Bubb looks at the importance of the Government's recent U-turn on the cap on income tax relief for charities.

There was great relief in the third sector last week when the Treasury announced that charitable giving would be exempted from the forthcoming cap on income tax relief.

As the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) has vociferously argued ever since the Budget announcement, the cap would have seriously affected charities' income, while raising only a relatively-small amount of extra tax revenue.
