New extremes

Mike Bennett reflects on Solace’s response to the 2006 challenge posed by the election of extreme right wing candidates to English councils.

In his piece in this week's edition of The MJ, Ed Turner raises a number of big concerns regarding the rise of extremism in European politics. I want to pick up on the governance challenges Turner identifies when a far-right party like the AfD holds elected office.

In May 2006 the BNP won 12 seats at Barking and Dagenham LBC and formed the official opposition. The Labour Party retained control of the council, winning 38 seats.
