The Mayors of communes in France host a fine civic tradition to welcome in the new year, celebrating successes and highlighting improvements. Mike Bennett samples the rosé.

Across France communes have this week come together to celebrate the New Year at the invitation of their local government leaders.

This republican tradition of ‘les voeux du maire' – the Mayor's best wishes – is the occasion for senior local government people to gather with local residents, public sector partners, neighbouring towns and villages and for the Mayor to celebrate recent successes while highlighting events and improvements for residents to look forward to.
