Fiscal devo has to be the destination sooner or later

Giving places power to raise their own money is a logical next stop for devolution, especially in the big cities that have the potential to use this power for big-ticket economic interventions, says Andrew Carter

The English devolution bandwagon rolls on, but where is it headed?

Six areas have joined the Devolution Priority Programme, which the Government says bridges the gap between the English Devolution White Paper and the forthcoming English Devolution Bill. These places are a step closer to taking on powers over planning, transport and economic development currently held by Whitehall.
