England's local government ombudsman today demands wide-ranging new powers to investigate complaints across town halls, social care and education amid concern current regimes are outdated.

In his triennial review of local complaints regimes and public accountability, Michael King, the local government and social care ombudsman, makes a bid for extensive but ‘absolutely deliverable' new responsibilities ahead of the organisation's 50th anniversary in 2024.
