Paul Lankester argues why districts can't be forgotten if social care services are to join up and budget cuts managed

The chancellor's Autumn Statement has been and gone. It did seem there was more interest in the statement than there has been for many a year, both in the media and the public sector. As is well known in local government, the key issue is how the Autumn Statement will translate into the local government settlement. It is likely the draft settlement will be received in the third week of December, although the consequences of it will be far-reaching.

Reduced funding is known, but the exact amount is still a matter for speculation and will undoubtedly vary according to the type of services provided by the council. The issue of funding social care is a national issue that is being prioritised, as are matters relating to the provision of housing.
