Future funding for local government has never been so uncertain

Many will be hoping that big ministerial changes will mean progress on big issues including levelling up, says Dan Bates. But he would settle for more clarity in one key area for local government.

As we kick off our budget-setting process for next year and beyond, I can't recall a time when future funding for local government has been so uncertain.

It is now almost a decade since the Government's funding formula distributed grant based upon assessed needs and resources and, in that time, revenue support grant has all but disappeared, leaving us with council tax, business rates and the New Homes Bonus, as well as a handful of smaller grants that come and go without warning!
