A children's charity has appealed for a reversal of cuts to funds for families facing financial hardship to avert a crisis following the coronavirus pandemic.

New research by The Children's Society found spending has fallen by 86% or £250m since 2010/11, when £2911m was spent on the discretionary social fund, compared to its successor, local welfare assistance schemes, worth £41m in 2018/19.
