Government must act now to meet urgent housing-with-care needs

The Government’s pay and career development proposals for care staff do not go far enough, and the UK lags behind other countries on access to housing-with-care, says Kris Peach.

The recently-published white paper on adult social care reform set out the Government's ten-year vision for adult social care and proposals for funding over the next three years.

In essence, the white paper talks about ‘making every decision about care a decision about housing'. Beyond the care staffing crisis, there is also an urgent need for expansion of affordable housing options with care provision. On the 1st of July 2021, Parliament debated the effect of COVID-19 on retirement communities - one of the key points raised was the potential of housing-with-care models.
