The Government should establish a Net Zero Delivery Authority

The Government needs to unleash local authorities in the fight against the climate crisis, says Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse.

Local authorities determine what is built in our communities, how we get from A to B, and how we reduce our waste. They are best placed to understand their communities and deliver policies that fit with their wishes. Each community in the UK is unique and requires specific support to reach net zero. What is not helping these communities is a Westminster Government preventing councils from decarbonising their areas.

Over 300 local authorities have set a net zero target and declared a climate emergency, and 132 councils have net zero targets of 2030 or sooner. For evidence of what they can do, just look at the success our Liberal Democrat run councils have had in implementing sustainable, green policies to reduce emissions.
