The grumpy boss

Senior managers’ frustration when things are not happening and irritation with the whole system is not the same as being irritable or grumpy, says Blair McPherson

If you're a senior manager you're always supposed to be positive, to look on the bright side of life as Monty Python sang. Being positive is part of inspiring your team, if you're confident they will be. After all if you're not you can't expect them to be. So how come some very successful leaders also have a reputation of being rather grumpy?

My manager had a quiet word with me.  Now, they said , is not a good time to raise your doubts with the chief executive. His leg is hurting him and he is a bit grumpy (old rugby injury, waiting for an operation). Publicly he always seemed positive and in one to ones he could be charming but apparently with his senior management team he could be a bit grumpy.
