Hackney chief steps back from duties

Hackney LBC chief executive Mark Carroll has announced he will be stepping back from his council duties to attend to family matters.

Hackney LBC chief executive Mark Carroll has announced he will be stepping back from his council duties to attend to family matters.

Mr Carroll started in the job in October 2021, joining from Essex CC where he was executive director for place and public health. Prior to Essex, he held a number of roles as a senior civil servant.

He replaced outgoing chief executive Tim Shields, who retired after 13 years in the role.

The MJ understands Hackney LBC's current group director of finance and corporate resources, Ian Williams, will take on the role of acting chief executive in Mr Carroll's absence.

Mr Williams, who has been with the London borough for the past 16 years, has already served as interim chief executive for five months in 2021 after the departure of Tim Shields.

A Hackney spokesperson said: ‘The chief executive is currently on extended annual leave to attend to family matters. Whilst he is away our Section 151 officer is acting chief executive, and council business continues as usual.'
