Hard Times Promoting Greater Synergy

Councils are still in a prime position to make things happen through exerting municipal power, says Alex Mathieson.

Local government is certainly changing thanks to a range of political and economic drivers. The need to cut budgets has encouraged the more successful councils to share and leverage their power rather than exert control.

In the new world, the successful local councils are having to work more closely with the private sector, voluntary groups and others to meet local needs and build the conditions for economic growth.
